The Designers’ Open 2010 offers a positive summary. <<<

What a festival! The positive feedback from exhibitors as well as visitors was unprecedented. We are delighted at the media coverage of the festival in radio, television, and print media before and during the Fair. Differentiated reportage by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitungas well as designlines and architonic followed.

From sneakers in a hotel room, “design perpetrators” in broom closets, special exhibitions in the festival hall, unseen prototypes in former industrial buildings, and the many happenings throughout the urban area of Leipzig (DO/Spots) – more than 10,000 visitors had the chance to talk shop, to marvel about these things, and to question them. Not surprisingly, there were talks about new projects and possible joint ventures

A new foundation was laid which joined the open-to-the-public Fair with the DO/Market and DO/Industry. The two themes – retail and presentation – could now be communicated clearly to the respective target groups.

Werner Aisslinger / Juror (Studio Aisslinger, Berlin) – Designers’ Open is a very brisk, inspiring, and unconventional festival. I enjoyed the interdisciplinary design approach and the mix of exhibitors: newcomers and universities. I was very surprised by the authentic installation of the China burner in the passage and the enthusiastic approach of founders Jan Hartmann and Andreas Neubert.

Stefan Maas / Visitor (MAAS+CO, Köln) – I liked the concept’s focus on content and quality instead of show and quantity a lot. I added the catalogue with interesting articles to my archive. The Asian mise-en-scène on the ground floor was very pretty. Best regards and see you next year!

Michael Gehlen, Exhibitor (Design braucht Täter, Köln) – Compliments! Respect! A truly world-class event! Thank you for letting us take part!

During the opening ceremony on Thursday Night, MDR (Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk – Central German Broadcasting) awarded Jörg Bachmann of University of Applied Arts Schneeberg with the Café Trend Design Prize 2010. Bachmann received the prize for his swinging waste bin, a student project produced within the coursework of Product and Woodwork Design.

The Designers’ Open 2010 Jury members Werner Aisslinger of Studio Aisslinger, Berlin, Tillmann Prüfer, Style editor ar ZEITmagazin, Berlin, and Volker Hohmann, executive at ikarus Design Handel GmbH, Frankfurt am Main, presented this year’s DO/Jury Awards on Friday Night, October 29. The winners are: Stefan Hölldobler and Patrick Gülzow of designbüro diefabrik Leipzig for their TomBox, Yi-Cong Lu from Halle for his Wohnwerkzeuge (living tools), and Atelier Hurra with Mandy Blaurock and Susan Kreher from Berlin for their poetic film „Ich-Apparat“.

This year well-known has met newly discovered: the Palais Central has presented a unit of the Hôtel de Pologne (kick-off event DO/2008) and the Kretschmann’s Hof. The presentation of the latest national and international design developments, the vast programme and DO/Nights took place on more than 4.500 m².

We want to thank all participants that made the success of this event possible. No matter if team, exhibitor or partner: everyone contributed their individual share and helped with a very special commitment.
